The Lowdown: Natural Beaded Rows Extensions
As you can (obviously) tell in my photos, I recently got Natural Beaded Rows Hair Extensions from Intentions Salon here in Raleigh (salon info here). I’ll just cut to the chase and say obsessed is an understatement.
I’ve always wanted super long hair (aka Amber Fillerup locks) but once my hair gets past a certain length it just stops growing. No matter what I do at a certain point it just looks unhealthy. I’ve had long hair in the past but after getting frustrated that it wasn’t growing as much as I would have liked, I decided to chop it off last summer. I love my hair short and it is always easier to do. But I still really wanted long blonde flowing hair.
Intentions
That’s where Jules comes in. Jules runs Intentions Salon and is basically just a badass. She’s seriously awesome at color (check out her work here). I’m super picky about who colors my hair because I always want it to be so blonde it can be seen from space (I would sleep with my head in a bucket of bleach if they let me). My best friend has been doing my hair for years but she recently moved away so I decided to give Intentions Salon a try.
When Jules approached me about extensions I was immediately down with the idea. She is one of only three Natural Beaded Rows stylists in Raleigh and the surrounding area. I’ll admit I was super confused by the name at first. I had only ever had clip in extensions but was always interested in getting more permanent ones. Jules does a lot better job explaining what NBR is here than I ever could. But basically they are sewn in wefts of real hair that is custom colored to match your hair.

The Process
They were invented by this chick (I’m kind of obsessed with her style) in Laguna Beach, CA. What makes NBR different, at least in my mind, is that they are SO much better for your hair than other types of extensions. There’s no glue, tape, or any type of adhesive. They come out easily without any damage to your real hair. After bleaching the shit out of my hair for the past 10+ years, I wanted extensions that would not damage my poor hair anymore than I already have.
The process took so much less time than I thought. Because I have such thick hair, coloring my real hair was the most time consuming part. The first day or two they were tight, like really tight. But after that they were totally fine and I can treat them as if they were my real hair.

Bottom Line
It’s been about a week since I got them and I am slowly learning how to style such long hair. I love the way they look and (at least to me and random strangers I ask) they honestly look real. Even Kyle, who is never optimistic about my beauty treatments, thinks they look natural. And he was very honest about his disdain for my eyelash extensions!
I’m really excited to keep styling them and sharing my experience. Its always fun to completely change up your look.
Here’s to fake hair and real talk.
